| Chapter 9
She ran to him as soon as he got off the launch. She was soaked to the bone and shivering. She held on so tight he could tell she was scared. “What’s wrong?” “I-I just came down and she was there. She… She was looking right at me. I could swear she saw me. I ran out of the room and she heard me. I know she did. I g-got into the closest tunnel entrance I could, the one by the foyer. I went back through to the den. She was sitting there in front of the fire with some guy that looked like an undertaker. She was looking right at the fire…but she couldn’t see anything…she just stared…and she didn’t even look at the guy when she talked to him…then I called you…I didn’t know what else to do…” “C’mon, let’s go….we’ll see who she is.” “No, I’ll get caught.” “She probably doesn’t even know who you are, Gia. Besides, you have to get by the fire and get warm or else you’ll catch pneumonia.” “Okay…if you’re sure…” “I’m sure, it’s all right now…” “Okay…Okay…” He held her close as they walked through the house toward the den. He opened the door and saw a shadow against the fire. It was definitely a woman. One he recognized. “Chloe?” “Nikolas, is that you?” She turned toward the sound of his voice. “Who’s with you?” “A friend of mine. Chloe Morgan, this is Gia Campbell. Gia, Chloe Morgan….” “Nice to meet you. Was that you in the room earlier?” “Yeah, it was….you’re Chloe Morgan the designer?” “Not anymore. Kind of hard to be a blind designer.” Nikolas and Gia sat on the rug in front of the fire. Nikolas grabbed a blanket off the back of the chair and wrapped it around her, and rubbed the small of her back. Looking back at Chloe, he could see she was definitely blind by the look in her eyes. But what struck Nikolas most was what was hanging around her neck. A pendant. One with the Cassadine coat of arms. “Chloe if you don’t mind me asking, what are you doing here? And where have you been.? Gia said there was someone else here….?” “Yes. I told him I thought someone was in the room and he went to search the grounds. I guess it was your friend Gia, but with your grandmother, you can’t be too careful.” Nikolas was confused. The last he heard she was off with Jax somewhere. But why would either of them have any problem with Helena? And why was she here? “Chloe, I still don’t understand….who are you talking about?” “That would be me, Nikolas.” Gia screamed. “There he is….I told you…” Nikolas looked in the doorway and saw something he never thought he’d see again. His uncle’s face. Tears started to swell in his eyes. He rose and walked toward his uncle…”You….you’re dead.” “No…no…..that’s just what your grandmother wanted everyone to think….I’m afraid I’m far from deceased.” They embraced. Nikolas could hardly speak. “So, Nikolas….aren’t you going to introduce me to your lovely friend?” “Yes, yes…of course….” Gia looked up at him, still shivering and obviously confused…but smiling. “Gia Campbell, it is my great honor to introduce you to my uncle, Stefan. Uncle, this is Gia.” “Wait…. aren’t you the guy who they said that Luke guy tossed from the boat?” “I’m not sure what “they” said, but that would not be unusual for one of my mother’s machinations. So she set up Spencer….interesting…” Chloe spoke up… “But you figured she would..” “Yes, she sought to kill the proverbial two birds with one stone. Set up Spencer for my death, then slowly torture me before killing me herself. But we defeated her, didn’t we dear?” Stefan then did something that surprised Nikolas. He kissed Chloe on the forehead. “So where have you been?” “Your grandmother had us imprisoned on an island very near our family compound in the Mediterranean. We tried several times to escape, but we were unsuccessful. It was only when it became utterly vital that we make our escape did we become daring enough to succeed.” “So tell me something…” “Certainly, Miss Campbell” “Why does Granny Evil want to kidnap a clothing designer?” “Why does she do anything? Out of cruelty, pettiness, and fear. Chloe has the unique ability to predict Helena’s next move. As you know, Nikolas, Chloe is quite ill. While on the island, her condition progressed to the point of this blindness. “ “So you brought her back to treat her. Why aren’t you at the hospital now?” “I wouldn’t let him. Helena can’t know we’re back, at least not yet. If I go in for treatment, she’ll know we’re home. Besides, I don’t feel comfortable accepting radiation treatment in my condition.” Nikolas and Gia were both confused. Nikolas warily asked, “You mean the blindness? I don’t understand.” “No, not that condition.” She reached out her hand for Stefan’s. “Nikolas, I’m pregnant.”
